Natural colourants are not only for textiles! Professor Richard Blackburn from the University of Leeds, School of Design visited professor Riikka Räisänen at the University of Helsinki in early May. Together they ran several experiments using lignin, willow extract, emodin and dermocybin to dye human hair. Despite using only 10% of normal dye concentrations the results were promising.
Professor Blackburn has accepted the invitation to give a session keynote speech at the Biocolours 2024 conference. As he is also the reviews editor for Coloration Technology, he and Professor Räisänen discussed the possibility of editing a special issue of Coloration Technology with the papers presented at the conference.
