Postdoctoral Researcher Mikko Herrala

I am working as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Eastern Finland, School of Pharmacy, Toxicology research group in Kuopio. In the BioColour project, we study toxicity of biocolourants in cultured cells as a part of a biocolourants developing process. It’s important to research the safety of biocolourants before larger scale use because natural origin per se does not guarantee the safety.

I am an environmental scientist. Before my research career I was working as a health inspector. When I got back to the academic world, I did my PhD studying health effects and genotoxicity of electromagnetic fields. Soon after defending my dissertation, I was asked to join to the BioColour project. After thinking for awhile, I agreed and changed my research environment to gain new challenges. Being a part of BioColour has been a fruitful experience as I have learned a lot from biocolourants and different ways to do research since we have researchers from various disciplines in consortium. BioColour inspired me to apply funding for further research and currently I study genotoxicity of anthraquinones as an Academy of Finland postdoctoral fellow.

In my free time, I like doing sports and I play floorball many times a week. In summer disc golf is my favorite hobby. Sometimes I try to find geocaches with my common-law partner. In addition, I like to follow sports, especially ice hockey. Ilves Tampere is my favorite team.
